Why We Haven’t Blogged Since 2020 – And Why That’s About to Change

If you’ve been following us for a while, you might’ve noticed things went a little quiet on our blog since 2020. Truth be told, it’s been a wild ride – one filled with uncertainty, growth, risk, reinvention, and a whole lot of Flow.
The Quiet Years: Covid, Challenges, and One-Man Missions
When the world shut down in 2020, Flow DNA – like many small, passion-driven businesses – faced enormous challenges. With events canceled and flow arts on pause, our community struggled, and so did we. Duncan, our founder and creative mind behind the brand, had to hold down the fort solo for nearly two years. It was survival mode – fixing, fulfilling, designing, and dreaming, all at once.
A Leap of Faith: Selling It All to Travel and Learn
In 2022, Duncan made a huge life decision: he sold his house and set off on a six-month journey across the USA. This wasn’t just a break – it was a mission to dive deep into the global flow arts scene, connect with makers, and level up Flow DNA’s prop-making game. From underground fire jams to cutting-edge makerspaces, Duncan absorbed skills, knowledge, and inspiration that would lead to the next era of flow prop evolution.
During this time, he finally got access to the tools and tech needed to create the Mojura polycarbonate grips with attachable fire frames – a design long in the making. It was in these U.S. spaces where the vision began to become reality.
Flow DNA Reignited
While Duncan was learning and creating overseas, back home in South Africa, Carey-Ann from Smart Living SA stepped in to keep the online store running smoothly. Thanks to her support, Flow DNA not only survived – it quietly began to thrive again. When Duncan returned, we were ready to take things to the next level.
Fast Forward to 2025 – And Beyond
Today, Flow DNA has officially entered its next chapter. We’ve just launched our beta version of the world’s first interchangeable LED and fire fans – yes, you heard that right. We’re also prepping to open a brand new retail space and bring in a whole new line of LED flow props, made by spinners, for spinners.
This journey has been about more than just surviving. It’s been about transformation. And now, with renewed energy, new tech, and a team ready to move forward – we’re bringing the blog back to share it all with you.
